Maps tell stories. Maps show us how our view of the world has changed over time. Maps can drop out all the visual confusion allowing our attention to be focused. Maps can provide a sense of the character of place. Maps can take us back in time...or forward. Maps allow us to travel, anywhere and everywhere. Maps can show us something we've never seen before right in our backyard. The North Branch Prairie Restoration project works on public lands in Cook County, Illinois. A crazy, heavily populated county in northeastern Illinois. Perhaps you've heard of Chicago? When you look at this map, you don't see Chicago or the or evidence of weight of humanity. What you see are the veins and arteries of the waterways that flow through the region. Treasured and beloved open spaces are threaded along the waterways. These are the sites the NBPR Project work and commune with nature, preserving and passing on the love and reverence for future generations.
