When this job was described to me, I marveled at the wonderful diversity of nature. I live in the Midwest; we do not have gator holes here.
Alligators clear vegetation from large holes in limestone using their snout and feet. The gator holes become oases in the dry seasons. Many freshwater animals take refuge in the holes, moving right in with the alligators. The gator holes support enough life to repopulate the everglades when the rains return. The gator holes draw other predators, birds and mammals in search of food. The plant life is especially rich due to the mini-ecosystem created in part by the gator. In short the gator holes become an epicenter for new life.
This drawing was created for a client in South Carolina to be used to help explain gator holes.
